Navy Holland Class Submarines. History and photographs of the Royal
Navy Holland Class Submarines of the early 1900's including Nos 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5. These submarines were the first submarines to be
commissioned by the Royal Navy, all five having entered service by 1903.
The Royal Navy in 1900 realised that it would require to have submarines. due to the number of submarines in service and being built for the French and American navies. The Electric Boat company entered negations with the Royal navy to build 8 Holland type submarines. It was agreed that these would be built under license by Vickers at barrow. and work began in 1900 a total of 5 submarines were built. Displacement: On surface 113 tons, submerged 122 tons, Speed. surface 7.5 knots submerged 6 knots. Range 500 nautical miles at 7 knots on the surface. Armament: one 18-inch bow torpedo tube and carried three torpedo's Crew: 8 |

| No 1 | 2nd October 1901 | Used for training purposes at Fort Blockhouse. Sold for scrap in October 1913. It was while being towed to Portsmouth that she foundered and was lost, only to be rediscovered in April 1981. She was restored at Gosport Submarine Museum. | |
| No 2 | 21st February 1902 | Sold for scrap and broken up in October 1913. | |
| No 3 | 9th May 1902 | Sold for breaking in October 1913. | |
| No 4 | 23rd May 1902 | Foundered on 3rd September 1912 but later was re-floated and used as a target in 1914. | |
| No 5 | 10th June 1902 | Served with the 1st Flotilla at Fort Blockhouse until removed form the navy list in August 1912. Foundered while on tow on 8th August 1912. | |

Our First Submarine 1902 This picture shows the first submarine of the King's Navy. It was Britain's proud boast that she ruled the sea, and, though fighting under the surface may not have appealed to the British sailor at the time, Naval supremacy was to be maintained at all costs and sacrifices. |
