Class Protected Cruisers. Photos and history of the D'Assas
Class protected cruisers of the French Navy, including Cassard, D'Assas
and Du Chayla.
Cassard. Built at Cherbourg and laid down in 1894 and launched May 1896 finally completed in February 1898Dyuring world war one she spent her service career in the Mediterranean from 1914 till 1917 when she was attached to the Indian Ocean fleet returning to the Mediterranean and red Sea in 1918. In 1922 / 1923 she had her turrets removed and became part of a gunnery training School. Du Chayla Built at Cherbourg and laid down in March 1894, launched in September 1895 and completed in February 1898. In August 1907 the Du Chayla supported the Casablanca landings and during world war one she served in the Atlantic in 1914 to 12916 and the red sea in 1916 to 1918. and serving at the end of the war of Lebanon. returning again to the |red sea in 1918 to 1919. In 1918 four of her 6.4 inch guns were removed along with =some of the smaller 3 pounder guns. (these being given to the army). She was finally taken of the service role in 1921 Displacement: D'Assas was 3962 tons, and Cassard and Du Chayla were 3890 tons. Speed: 20 knots, Compliment: 370 to 390 crew. Armament: Six 6.4-inch Guns Quick Firing M1893. Four 3.9 -inch Guns, Ten 3 pounder and between Five and Nine 1 pounder Two 18-inch Torpedo tubes AW. |
