Order Code PHX331 We understand this ship was involved in the transport of around 2,000 Jews to Sydney, Australia from Britain, arriving in October 1940. The original card of the photo above has on the reverse dates of a voyage. These are as follows. Left Southampton September 7th, passed Gibraltar September 11th, Port Said September 17th, Aden September 22nd, Colombo September 28th. We are not sure whether these are from the famous voyage or not, but it seems possible. We would like to add a detailed page about the history of this ship. Armed merchant cruiser Ophir in 1901. Commissioned at Tilbury by Commodore Winsloe for the Duke of Cornwall's visit to the colonies. She was torpedoed and sunk on 19th October 1917. |
