Pearl 3rd Class

Pearl Class cruisers.  Five of this class were provided under the terms of the Imperial Defence Act of 1887 and were paid for by Australia on the understanding that they were to be stationed in Australian waters.  HMS Philomel was transferred to the New Zealand Government in 1914, and became a base ship in 1921, was sold in 1947 and scuttled off New Zealand in 1949.  Wallaroo (renamed Wallington in 1949), was reduced to harbour service in 1906.

Displacement : 2575 tons.  Length : 278 ft.  Beam : 47 ft.  Depth 15 ft 6 ins.  I.H.P. : 7,500.  Speed : 19knts.  Armament 8 - 4.7 QF, 8 - 3pdr QF, 4 MGs, 2 - 14in TT, 2 TC.  Complement : 217.

HMS Mildura (ex Pelorus) 25th November 1889 Sold in 1906.
HMS Pallas 30th June 1890 Sold in 1906.
HMS Pearl 28th July 1890 Sold in 1906.
HMS Phoebe 1st July 1890 Sold in 1906.
HMS Philomel 28th August 1890 Transferred to New Zealand Navy in 1914. Convoy escort from August 1914 until April 1917. Became depot ship then training hulk in 1921. Sold on 17th January 1947. Scuttled 6th August 1949.
HMS Ringaromma (ex Psyche) 10th December 1889 Sold in 1906.
HMS Tauranga (ex Phoenix) 28th October 1889 Sold in 1920.
HMS Wallaroo (ex Persian) 5th February 1890 Became guardship at Chatham in 1914. Renamed Wallington in March 1919, changing back to original in 1920 before being sold for scrap.

HMS Pallas

Pearl class cruiser of the 1890s HMS Pallas pictured off the coast of Bermuda with a rising sun. She was captained by the Hon G Stopford c.1900 when this photograph was taken. Bermuda was a favourite place for sailors due to the variety of fresh provisions which could be obtained and of course the warm climate.

Postcard relating to HMS Philomel.  The photos below also relate to this event  The text on the reverse of the card reads as follows :

Turks losses mentioned on these cards are wrong as we found out some time later from Turks own lists . 124 killed, 43 wounded, 52 missing.  So we killed a lot more than we knew.  The scene of our engagement with the Turks on Monday, February 8th, when we had 1 killed, 5 wounded, and of the 5 wounded 2 men died later of their injuries.  Our boat landed on the shore shown on photograph to cut communication wires and find out what the mules and camels were carrying.  They no sooner landed than they were fired on by Turks from the castle.
